On May 17, 2015, 38-year-old Michael Keith Gorley disappeared from Stanford, Kentucky. More than a decade later, his whereabouts and what happened to him remain unknown.
Michael was born on December 22, 1976, to Sandra Hasty. At the time he vanished, he was living with his mother on McKinney Ridge Road in Stanford.
His disappearance came only days after he had been released from jail following a drug-trafficking investigation. Michael had been one of four people arrested after a traffic stop. He and another person were later released when a grand jury did not indict them, while the other two individuals were convicted.
The Day Michael Vanished
On the morning of May 17, Michael told his mother that he was going to visit a friend. He left the house in a gray 2001 Ford Explorer.
Later that afternoon, between approximately 3:30 and 4:00 p.m., two women arrived at Sandra’s home with troubling information. They said Michael had driven his SUV into a pond along Wilderness Trail Road and that the property owner wanted the vehicle removed.
Sandra went to the location herself.
The Ford Explorer was not completely submerged. Two of its tires were in the pond, but Michael was nowhere around.
His family recovered the vehicle and began contacting people who might know where he had gone.
The next confirmed information about Michael came that evening. Between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m., he was reportedly at a friend’s residence in the 5000 block of Knob Lick Road, also known as Highway 300, in Stanford.
According to people at the house, Michael eventually left on foot, supposedly heading toward Junction City, roughly two miles away.
But there was an important contradiction.
Around 11:00 p.m., Sandra called the residence and was told that Michael was still there.
Worried, Sandra and Michael’s sister went to the house themselves. When they arrived, Michael was gone. His hat and shoes were sitting outside on the porch.
For his family, the discovery immediately raised questions.
Michael’s mother later said she could not believe he would willingly leave the house without his shoes. She recalled that he would not even walk around his own home barefoot.
Unable to locate him, Sandra flagged down a Kentucky State Police trooper and reported Michael missing.
A Search Filled With Questions
According to Michael’s family, authorities initially did not treat his disappearance as an emergency. They were reportedly told that Michael was an adult and could leave on his own if he chose.
His relatives, however, did not believe that explanation.
In the days that followed, family members searched roads and surrounding areas near where Michael had last been seen. They say they received little assistance from law enforcement during those early efforts.
Sandra kept Michael’s shoes and hat in plastic bags, believing they could potentially become important evidence. However, the items were not collected by investigators until Detective Frank Thornberry took over the case approximately six months after Michael disappeared.
Thornberry later conducted more than 50 interviews as he continued working to determine what happened.
The case has been particularly difficult because investigators have never recovered Michael’s remains.
What Happened to His SUV?
One of the most troubling parts of the case remains the discovery of Michael’s Ford Explorer at the pond.
His mother believes someone else drove the vehicle there in an attempt to conceal evidence connected to his disappearance.
The circumstances surrounding the SUV have never been fully explained, leaving investigators and Michael’s family with a major unanswered question: why was his vehicle found at the pond while Michael was nowhere nearby?
His family believes Michael was murdered and suspects that people he knew may have been involved.
