Laken Snelling, a former University of Kentucky student accused of concealing the birth and death of her newborn in August 2025, pleaded guilty to manslaughter during an Aug. 21 hearing.
A spokesperson for the Fayette Circuit Court confirmed the plea.
Snelling, 22, was arrested in September 2025 in connection with an infant found dead in the 400 block of Park Avenue on Aug. 27, 2025. She was charged with manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing the birth of an infant after a Fayette County grand jury returned an indictment March 10.
Snelling previously entered a not-guilty plea during an April 10 hearing. According to the indictment, three witnesses — including a custodian of records at UK Medical Center, a Lexington police officer and a defense witness — testified before a Fayette County grand jury.
According to court documents, Snelling told police that around 4 a.m., she gave birth to a baby “which fell into the floor of her bedroom.” She told police that she did not believe the baby was breathing or alive, and she passed out around 30 minutes later. When she woke up at 7:30 a.m. for class, Snelling said she placed the towel-wrapped baby inside a black trash bag before cleaning blood off herself.
Investigators requested to search Snelling’s Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and iCloud accounts, which showed conversations between Snelling and her roommates. According to an affidavit, one of the roommates told investigators they all “had suspicions” that Snelling was pregnant but “never confirmed it with her.”
