The Night Michelle Disappeared
Michelle Pogmore was only 14 years old when she disappeared in Mount Druitt, New South Wales.
On the evening of February 20, 2004, Michelle attended a street party in Bidwill. She reportedly left the party at around 7 p.m.
Later that night, at approximately 9 p.m., she was seen in the Carlisle Avenue area of Mount Druitt.
It would be the last confirmed sighting of her alive.
Michelle never made it home.
Her family had no idea that the ordinary events of that evening would become the beginning of a nightmare that has lasted for more than two decades.
A Discovery in the Bushland
Two days later, on February 22, Michelle’s body was discovered in bushland near the Town Centre Reserve in Mount Druitt.
She had been found without clothing from the waist down.
At the time she was last seen, Michelle had been wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt marked with the letters “USA” on the front, white tracksuit-style pants, and light-blue sneakers.
Her new shoes were never recovered.
The discovery immediately turned the missing-person investigation into a murder inquiry.
Strike Force Icework was established to investigate Michelle’s death.
But despite extensive police work, the person responsible has never been identified.
What the Inquest Could Not Determine
An inquest into Michelle’s death was completed in February 2006.
The Deputy State Coroner was unable to establish exactly where or when Michelle died, or determine the precise cause of her death.
Based on the evidence available, the only conclusion that could be reached was that Michelle died sometime between February 20 and February 22, 2004.
The inquest therefore resulted in an open finding.
With no definitive explanation for what had happened to Michelle, the Coroner recommended that a $100,000 reward be offered for information that could help identify those responsible for her death.
Investigators continued following leads, but over time the available avenues were exhausted.
The case remained unsolved.
A Mother’s Questions
For Michelle’s mother, the years did not make the uncertainty easier.
She later remembered seeing her daughter after school on the Thursday before her disappearance. Michelle had initially been in a bad mood, but her mood changed when her mother gave her a new pair of shoes.
Her mother did not know Michelle planned to attend the street party that evening.
Had she known, she later said, she would have gone to collect her daughter.
Instead, she received the devastating news that Michelle had been found dead.
The loss was made even harder by the fact that there was no clear answer about who had taken her life
