On the morning of June 23, 1977, 18-year-old Connie Sue Madvig left her home in Houston, Texas, to make a routine trip to a nearby store.
She had made the same walk many times before.
That morning, however, Connie never came home.
Four days later, her body was discovered in a wooded area. Nearly five decades have passed since her murder, but the person responsible has never been identified.
A Routine Trip
Connie lived at a home on Spring Briar Lane with her family. On that Thursday morning, shortly after 7:30 a.m., she set out on foot toward the U-Tote’m store near Aldine Westfield and Domino.
She was going there to buy cigarettes and a soda, something she reportedly did most mornings.
There was nothing about the trip that appeared unusual.
But Connie never returned.
Her disappearance would soon become a homicide investigation.
A Discovery in the Woods
On June 27, four days after Connie vanished, Harris County deputies were called to the 2200 block of Sciaaca Road.
A local resident had been alerted by three children who said they had found a body while playing nearby. The resident then led deputies into a wooded section of the area.
There, investigators discovered the body of a young woman.
She was later identified as Connie Sue Madvig.
Evidence at the scene suggested that her body had been moved through the woods. One of Connie’s sandals was located roughly 219 feet from Sciaaca Road, with drag marks continuing for another 124 feet. Her other sandal was found between those locations.
Investigators also noted that her clothing was disturbed. At the time, authorities believed she may have been sexually assaulted, although the condition of her remains prevented them from establishing that with certainty.
The cause of death, however, was determined.
Connie had suffered two stab wounds to the chest.
Did Connie Know Her Killer?
From the beginning, investigators considered the possibility that Connie knew the person who killed her.
Newspaper reports from the time quoted investigators as saying they believed she may have been acquainted with her attacker.
Her family also told authorities that Connie had experienced difficulties in a previous romantic relationship. The available information does not provide further details about that relationship or establish that it was connected to her murder.
Those unanswered questions have remained part of the case.
Who was Connie meeting that morning, if anyone?
Did she encounter her killer while walking to the store?
Or did someone she already knew approach her later?
There has never been a public answer.
